Designing for Memory: How Scent Branding Deepens Guest Experience and Extends Brand Impact

Event participants enjoy mixing and matching fragrances at a custom room spray making experience.

At a fundraising gala, we were asked to design a scent that reflected the organization’s mission: rebuilding with dignity and care.

We created a blend of eucalyptus, bergamot, and lavender—clean, steady, and calm. Not too flashy, not too floral.

At the event, guests could fill and label their own room sprays. One woman approached the table and took her time reading the scent description, testing it on a swatch, asking great, thoughtful questions.

She took a bottle, applied her choice of customizable label (branded to the org, of course), and slipped it into her clutch.

After a moment, she said, “This feels right. I’ve supported this organization for years, and this… actually smells like what they do. Isn’t that weird?” (No, actually it isn’t weird at all.)

No big scene. No performance. Just a guest connecting with the experience; not through logos or speeches, but through something she could hold, use, and remember.

That is the power of scent when it’s designed with intention. It becomes a feeling guests can take home; a moment that lingers.

Why Scent Belongs in the Event Design Conversation

Sight and sound dominate most event planning conversations. But from a neuroscience perspective, scent is significantly more effective at creating emotional recall.

It is the only one of the five senses that bypasses the brain’s logical processing center and travels directly to the amygdala and hippocampus: the parts of the brain that govern emotion and long-term memory.

This direct access is why scent has been shown to trigger emotional memories more vividly than images or sounds. In fact, studies show:

  • 75% of emotions are generated by smell (Journal of Sensory Studies)
  • People are 100 times more likely to remember something they smell than something they see, hear, or touch (Sense of Smell Institute)
  • Scent can increase brand recall by up to 40% (Mood Media)

If your goal is to create something guests remember – not just admire – scent is one of the most powerful tools you can use.

How Laine Too Uses Scent at Events

At Laine Too, we incorporate scent into interactive experiences with the same care we bring to our glitter bars, spa stations, and make-and-take keepsake design. We focus on emotional clarity, guest accessibility, and brand alignment. Our fragrance-based activations fall into three core formats.

1. Pre-Made Scented Giveaways

These are ready-to-enjoy items, designed with a custom fragrance that reflects your brand or event concept. Each item is packaged in branded or personalized labels and can be handed out seamlessly.

Popular formats include:

  • Room sprays
  • Perfume rollers
  • Body scrubs
  • Candles
  • Poo-Pourri

These are practical, polished guest gifts designed to be used not shelved – and they have a tendency to fly off tables fast. Have you ever seen a line for swag before? We do all the time.

2. Single-Scent Activations

When the goal is cohesion, we work with clients to develop a single custom scent that reflects the mood, mission, theme, or aesthetic of the event. Guests then choose how they’d like to experience that scent (a mist, a scrub, a candle, etc.) while the fragrance remains consistent across the board.

This format is ideal for:

  • Brand launches
  • Corporate experiences
  • Weddings and galas

It offers clarity and memorability, without overwhelming guests with choices.

3. Custom Fragrance Bars

This is our most interactive format. Guests are guided through a curated scent menu and invited to blend their own fragrance on-site. We manage the process from start to finish, with attention to pace, flow, and guest experience.

Each participant bottles and labels their creation, leaving with something they chose and crafted themselves.

This format works beautifully for:

  • Bar and Bat Mitzvahs
  • Fundraisers
  • High-touch weddings
  • Brand activations
  • Team and client appreciation events

The result is a keepsake that carries personal meaning, without ever losing connection to the event it came from.

Why Scent Branding Works

The science is clear, but the guest experience is simpler than that. People remember how a space made them feel. Scent helps translate that feeling into something tangible.

It doesn’t need to be dramatic to be meaningful. A subtle, well-designed fragrance can reinforce values, atmosphere, and emotion in a way that logos and speeches cannot.

Unlike most giveaways, a beautiful scent product is used again, and again, and again. Every time they reach for it, the event returns to top of mind, quietly but clearly.
