A Short History of the Bag Charm – And Why It’s the Luxury Swag Your Guests Crave (without the price tag!)

Hermes named a handbag after Jane Birkin, and she promptly ruined it. She covered hers in stickers, beads, and charms, carried it until the leather went soft and the corners gave out, and then replaced it and did the same thing again. The most coveted bag in the world, treated like a middle school locker door.

It became one of the most copied looks in fashion, and the reason is not complicated. A bag straight from the store tells you who made it. A bag with things hanging off it tells you who is carrying it. People have understood that instinctively for a very long time, which is why charm-hanging keeps resurfacing every couple of decades and why it never fully goes away in between.

The Current Wave Is Enormous

The wholesale marketplace JOOR recorded a twelvefold jump in bag charm sales volume in the first half of 2025 compared with the same period the year before, and the number of brands carrying them tripled in that window. Anthropologie moved more than ten thousand charms across three months. Miu Miu, Loewe, Coach, and Louis Vuitton all sell them, and Balenciaga and Prada have shipped bags that arrive already decorated.
It gets covered as a handbag story, though that undersells where the charms actually end up. They go on backpacks, work bags, gym bags, water bottles, and keyrings. Anything you carry every day is fair game, which is a good part of why the trend has lasted longer than most people predicted.

One honest note about trends this large. What tends to burn out is never the practice itself but the specific charm that everybody bought at once. The one you made yourself is immune to that, which is most of the argument for the station.

What a Charm Bar Actually Is

Our charm bar is a combination rather than a single service, which is what makes it work across such different rooms. Depending on your event, it draws from beading, leather stamping, metal stamping, laser engraving, and permanent jewelry. We build the mix around your theme, your color palette, your branding if you have any, and who is actually going to walk up to the table.

A beaded charm bar with color and character reads one way. A leather and stamped metal setup reads completely differently, and suits a guest list where a beaded charm would feel like the wrong gift. Engraving puts a name, a date, or a monogram onto something that will get carried for years. Most events end up wanting some blend of all of it, and the blend is the part we work out with you beforehand.

Why Guests Stay at This Table

Charm making has a quality most stations do not. There is no correct outcome, so nobody can do it badly, and the choices are small enough to make quickly and personal enough to matter. Which charm, which color, which initial, which order. Guests who claim they are not crafty end up at that table for twenty minutes holding four options and asking a stranger which one looks better.

It also produces a keepsake that survives the drive home, which sounds obvious and is rarer than it should be. A great many party favors are lovely at the event and gone within a week. A charm clipped onto a bag gets seen every day by the person who made it and by everyone who walks past them, and it keeps pointing back to the night it came from.

Where the Charm Bar Belongs

At mitzvahs it does something specific. Thirteen-year-olds attending their fourth simcha of the season have a well-developed sense of what every event offers, and a charm bar is squarely inside the aesthetic they are already living in. The charm goes onto a backpack and back to school on Monday, which is a longer tail than most mitzvah favors manage.

At bridal showers and bachelorette weekends, the charms can carry a date, a set of initials, or an inside joke that only makes sense to eleven people. At milestone birthdays it works because the guest list spans forty years and everyone finds something at the table. At corporate events and brand activations, the charm carries a logo onto something people will keep, which is a considerably better outcome than the branded tote it would otherwise have been.

A Few Planning Notes

Put the station where people can watch it happening. Charm making is visually busy in a good way, and a table covered in components draws guests who had no plan to participate.
Tell us about your guest count early. The mix of services and the number of artists both scale with the room, and the difference between a comfortable line and a frustrating one is usually a decision made weeks in advance.
Bring your artwork to the consult if you have any. Logos, monograms, dates, and event motifs can be engraved or stamped, and knowing what we are working with ahead of time gives you a much better result than deciding on site.
